A Biography
Angus Nicolson Bathgate was born on January 24, 1939, at West Fenton farm cottages in East Lothian and attended primary schools in Gullane, Wallyford then Crookston and Musselburgh Grammar Schools.
After leaving school aged 15 he studied engineering at Ramsey Technical College then apprenticed with the Admiralty in Rosyth. At 21, he joined the Merchant Navy, travelling the world on Esso ships. During shore leave, Angus married Agnes Luke. The couple then settled in Wallyford, where they welcomed their children, Colin and Heather. After leaving the navy in 1964, he worked as a precision engineer for several local companies.
Retiring in 2008 enabled Angus to dedicate more time to photography which developed into a passion. He had a natural ability to connect with people and capture images of all aspects of life.
Angus was deeply involved in his community, capturing numerous events over the years. He freely contributed photographs to local calendars, newspapers, and to Musselburgh Museum, where his support was greatly appreciated.
Despite undergoing a heart bypass in early 2000, Angus continued to pursue photography and remained active until his health declined. He passed away at the age of 85.
Angus Bathgate was a kind, patient and curious man who had a deep love for his family, his surroundings and its history.
The exhibition is a tribute to his passion for photography and people and to illustrate the lasting impact he had on all who knew him.
He will be greatly missed.
